THE CHALLENGE
Going Beyond Carbon Accounting
Reuben Digital had been proactively measuring and reducing its carbon footprint since 2022, but two years on, Founder and Managing Director Ray Stephens realised that the business was thinking too narrowly about sustainability.
The company faced a fundamental shift in understanding what true sustainability meant for their business. “Instead of our company’s bottom line being only about profit, bringing sustainability into the mix gives you a Triple Bottom Line where People, Planet and Profit all need to be positively impacted,” says Ray.
But while Reuben Digital understood the theory, they lacked the framework and expertise to implement this broader approach effectively. They were stuck in a cycle of producing annual carbon reports without the strategic guidance needed to drive meaningful change across all three pillars of sustainability – society, environment, and economy.
The team initially considered pursuing B Corp certification but quickly discovered significant barriers. “We did briefly consider a B Corp pathway but quickly discovered that it would take us a while to reach the threshold accreditation score to allow us to be assessed as a B Corp company – and you don’t get any help whilst you strive to reach the appropriate score,” Ray notes.
This left Reuben Digital in a frustrating position: committed to sustainability leadership but without immediate access to the tools, measurement, and guidance needed to transform their good intentions into measurable impact across their entire business operation.
