Scaling AI-led food waste and surplus visibility, reduction and redistribution

FuturePlus - ESG and Sustainability Platform - Blue Tear - No Plus

Executive Summary

FuturePlus, a leading sustainability management and ESG reporting platform, recently played an integral role in a 16-month Innovate UK BridgeAI demonstrator project.

The resulting whitepaper, “On the table: Scaling AI-led food waste and surplus visibility, reduction and redistribution,” proves how AI can successfully tackle food waste. By applying our comprehensive impact measurement framework, the FuturePlus team structured the project’s data from concept to rigorous reporting, supporting the commercial and environmental viability of AI in the food supply chain

Tracking Impact in the Fight Against Food Waste

In 2021, the UK food manufacturing sector generated 1.4 million tonnes of food waste, even as 7.5 million people lived in food-insecure households. This coexistence of massive food waste and widespread food insecurity is a paradox that demands urgent, scalable solutions.

The Power of Incredible Partnerships

We are immensely proud to have worked alongside an incredible consortium of nine partners to close the gap between innovation and implementation. This project proved that tackling systemic issues requires collaborative technology development.

Working with industry leaders and visionaries, including Bristol Superlight, Company Shop Group, FareShare, Google Cloud, Howard Tenens, Nestlé UK&I, Sustainable Ventures, andZest, allowed us to test and iterate on an end-to-end process in a live business environment. Without the shared vision and dedication of every single partner, achieving these outcomes would not have been possible.

Why FuturePlus Was Integral to the Project

Climate tech innovation often struggles to scale because outcomes are not captured or communicated effectively. As a sustainability management and ESG reporting platform, FuturePlus’s unique role was to combine data-driven insights with expert consultancy to track and report the project’s true impact.

Led by Ellen Hughes, Head of Consultancy, our team ensured the initiative seamlessly moved from concept to implementation to evidence-based reporting. Our integral contributions included:

  • Concept & Alignment: At the outset of the project, FuturePlus facilitated a crucial impact-scoping workshop with all nine consortium partners. Ellen and the team helped establish a shared approach to measuring intended outcomes, ensuring that, despite different individual objectives, every partner was aligned on what success looked like from day one.
  • Implementation & The 5 Core Themes: You can only change what you measure. We applied an impact measurement framework based on the FuturePlus methodology, organising data across five expanded ESG themes: Environment, Climate, Social, Inclusion, and Economic.
  • Rigorous Reporting: By continuously tracking data throughout the pilot, from greenhouse gas emissions to the number of charities supported, we transformed raw pilot data into a transparent, compelling narrative that supports the viability of this model.

Why This Report is a Game-Changer

Historically, a “shoulder shrugging tolerance” to food waste has been built into the manufacturing system because it is operationally easier to send bulk surplus to animal feed or anaerobic digestion. This project challenged the status quo by introducing AI to provide real-time visibility and optimised redistribution.

By testing these solutions together, the consortium achieved incredible results:

  • 100% diversion of edible surplus from animal feed to human consumption on a pilot Nestlé production line.
  • A 15-fold increase in revenue from surplus sales, proving that reducing waste is not just an environmental imperative, but a commercial one.
  • The redistribution of 201.8 tonnes of food surplus, equivalent to over 480,000 meals, supports more than 94,000 people across 787 charities and community groups.

Looking Ahead

The food waste challenge is no longer about a lack of food, but a lack of visibility and structured action. This report proves that when we combine cutting-edge AI with trusted partnerships and a rigorous framework for measuring impact, everybody wins, from the manufacturers recovering costs to the communities receiving high-quality food.

Moving forward, FuturePlus will continue to provide enabling insights and technology support to our customers to accelerate growth and drive sustainable change. We invite the industry to read the whitepaper, face the data, and join us in scaling this collaborative, AI-led model across the UK.
